Happenings

31 December 2011

When I lived in Hell's Kitchen on 45th Street, two blocks from where the ball falls from the old Times building on New Year's Eve, I never missed the wild scene. Now, with everyone penned in for hours and no bathroom and no way to push back and forward until someone would fall and risk being stomped upon, it wouldn't be any fun at all. I'll be watching at home in Greenwich Village as I have for quite a few years. The good ol' days are gone forever, and with trepidation and anxiety I think about the growing gap between poor and rich, the growing interest in theistic authoritarianism rather than democratic secularism, and the dumbing down of the importance of the humanities.

I have a new Executor of my Estate: Emery, an attorney who pointed out that my self-written Will had all the italics and semicolons in the right place but contained major legal deficiencies. Moral: Don't be your own lawyer or your own physician! But do write 7 books between being 80 and 90. . . .

Following is a photo about one of my former New Canaan parents, famed American photographer Pedro E. Guerrero (who worked with Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder, and Louise Nevelson). It was sent to me by his daughter, my ex-student Barbara Guerrero in Vermont.

Pedro (born 1917)  is reading
The New York Times on his new iPad2. Not bad for another nonagenarian.

I'm in between the sheets with Actress Dame Maggie Smith and nine pages of other Smiths in the just-received Who's Who in the World 2012 (Marquis, 29th Edition). I'm cross-indexed in Arts:Literary between Sir Salman Rushdie and Gore Vidal. I'm not bragging, just reporting. . . .

26 December 2011

The cause of Rapper Heavy D's November 8th death was announced by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office: a pulmonary embolism caused by deep leg vein thrombosis. Dwight Arlington Myers had died after a flight back from Europe where he had performed at a Michael Jackson tribute concern in Wales. For years during any plane trip I have made a point of getting out of my seat and walking every 30 or so minutes. For the same reason I get up from the computer to avoid the same problem. The over 300-pound rapper and Sean (P. Diddy) Combs once visited Variety Recording Studio to see about buying it from me.

25 December 2011

God wrote again, this time not from Italy but from British Columbia:

Dearest Maestro -
I received volume 3 of In the Heart of Showbiz with much interest and many thanks.
FYI, I purchased the hardback of Who's Who in Hell some years ago because I felt the need to be kept informed. Later on I also got my hands on the slimmer Celebrities in Hell. They will all be hearing from me in due course. I promise you, I haven't been dozing off.

          As ever, God

So modest, he never mentioned his son Jonathan, who portrayed Jesus in the movie-made-for-TV of Judas (2004) and Joseph Smith as the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith in The Work and the Glory (2004, 2005, 2006).

Nor did he mention whether, as Jack the Ripper, he still haunts the areas around the Whitechapel district of London. A Handbook for Attendants on the Insane: The Autobiograph of Jack the Ripper (2006) is available from amazon.com for $26.50 or $666.66 from chelCbooks

Nor did he mention his third trinity: acting. He has been a priest as well as a magician, for example, and on a London stage he was Hamlet.

Cousins Priscilla McGeehon and Ken Smith were again end-of-year hosts for Ligardy and me.  Ken actually cooked a goose, and one of the side dishes included rabbit. Other guests included artist Rick Purdy, wife Lea, and their three children. Rick's daughter Helen raced to get in the picture, and just behind me are two of her father Rick's works. We all have an Iowa connection. (Photo is by Helen's mother, Lea.)
